Who can participate?
All Students in grades 6 — 8 who attend public, private, parochial or home school are eligible.
1st, 2nd and 3rd Place winning essays will receive...
1st Place - $100 Cash. Winner will be invited to read his/her essay aloud at
The Mt. Prospect Veterans Memorial Day ceremony in the Veteran's Memorial Band Shell located at Lions Park on
Monday morning May 27, 2024 and be asked to ride in a convertible car for the Memorial Day parade.
2nd Place - $75 Cash
3rd Place - $50 Cash
There will also be 3 possible Honorable Mention prizes to be determined.
Contest Rules
- All student essays must address the theme, 'What Memorial Day means to me".
- Student will submit one original essay of 250-500 words, typed and double-spaced.
- Student is encouraged to discuss the essay theme with teachers, parents and friends.
- Student must write the essay himself/ herself and in his/her own words.
- The essay should be positive and clearly focused on the theme.
- Teachers or parents may check the essay for spelling and grammar but the content of the essay must remain that of the students.
- All entries become the sole property of the Mt. Prospect Memorial Day parade committee, which shall have all rights thereto.
- By signing the consent, the parent(s) agree to all terms and conditions of the contest, and allow the entrant's name to be publicized.
- An official Memorial Day Essay Contest entry form must accompany the completed essay.
- Deadline for entries is Friday, May 17, 2024
Criteria for Judging of Essays
- Essays will be evaluated on the quality of writing that is associated with the appropriate grade level.
- Essays will be evaluated on a 100 point system with up to 20 points for following instructions, up to 20 points for spelling and grammar, up to 20 points for readability and organization and up to 40 points for originality, adherence to theme, content and overall impact upon the reader.
